Problems

1. Not enough resources to accommodate the spreading disease

2. Not enough organization between health workers and families who exhibit the symptoms

solutions

use an SMS service (powered by Ushahidi) that families of victims can ask for help. The live billboard will update their location and report live on where the disease is spreading. This will help the health workers to allocate better their services and move more efficiently.

How are we going to do this?

1. There are NPO’s such as Ushahidi that we can work with to power our SMS campaign. The message should be simple and straightforward. It could be as simple as having a message that outlines the symptoms, and encourage them to text “Help” and send it to “2388” (this could be in French as well). We need to keep in mind that literacy rate is pretty low (38%, mostly male dominated), so we probably need to send messages that are more visual to get the message across.

2. Launching a live billboard that would be more visual, and show “heat maps” where the epidemic is happening, live. The billboard will feature a map that outlines where the epidemic is growing, live. By utilizing the information we got from Ushahidi, we can pinpoint specifically and show where to delegate the limited resources. This tool would be able to guide hospitals, and other healthcare providers, emergency response teams to go into places where the epidemic is concentrated – to contain the disease before it even spreads further.
